Over 60 Track – Coming Soon!

Health care providers often overlook the possibility of substance abuse or misuse in older adults. Despite the staggering rate of increase in the abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs among adults 60 and over, health care providers often find it difficult to diagnose because the symptoms can mimic other medical conditions and behavioral disorders found among this population. In addition, misconceptions and ageism add to reasons why older adults remain under-identified, under-diagnosed, and under-treated.

There is no demographic that is immune to the possibility of substance misuse. And while any age group is susceptible, it is also true that the majority of available treatment is geared toward those between the ages of 25 and 45. Genesis Programs recognizes that while most issues related to substance misuse are common along all ages, the over 60 population presents unique life experiences, perspectives, and ideas that can best be cultivated into their recovery through participation with others who can best identify with them. Additionally, as many of the definitions, models, and classifications of drug misuse or alcohol consumption levels are do not account for age-related physiological and social changes, they simply do not apply to older adults.

As outpatient treatment providers for over two decades, our experience has inspired us to provide this under-served population with the Genesis Over 60 Track. Group sessions will be held three days per week from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Treatment is individualized, and length of stay is determined by personal progress and specific need. Cost of treatment is based on length of stay and, if applicable, financial assistance can be provided.
